DVSA publishes CBT Standards Check guidance

Tuesday, December 1, 2015

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has published compulsory basic training (CBT) Standards Check guidance for examiners and instructors.

From early January 2016, DVSA will be changing how it assesses motorcycle instructors during their CBT Standards Check.

The changes to the assessment will move away from the current fault-based system which focused on what was taught, to one that now looks at how the training is given and the Standards Check is now aligned to the National Driver and Rider Training Standard which sets out the criteria that are required for motorcycle trainers.

The assessment is now based around three key competencies:

  • lesson planning

  • risk management

  • teaching and learning strategies

The new guidance for examiners carrying out motorcycle trainer standards checks is available here, and the motorcycle trainer standards check form can be found here.
